A talk with the TRONto t-shirt designers

TRONto T-Shirt from Bearhug.ca Back in the heady post Zerohour days of the TRON: Legacy ARG, I came across a great spin on the TRON theme. Ian, a designer from Canada, had taken the Toronto skyline and with a simple omission of the letter 'O' created the TRONto skyline! Well, that and some great design on his sketchblog.
I was happy to find out the the shirt had moved out of concepting and is now available for purchase! I got a chance to talk to Bearhug.ca, the design firm who is producing the shirt, and here's what they said:
GeekFilter - How did you come up with the idea for the shirt?
Bearhug.CA - This was a pure accident. We had been trying to do a Toronto specific shirt but we really didn’t what to feature the CN Tower. Everyone does that. Hours of sketching and creative were getting us nowhere. The CN
Tower dominates the landscape and really is the symbol of Toronto. It was hard to sidestep that. However a lucky accident solved our problem. It was during the research stage that Ian, our art director, made a typo on the word Toronto. He typed it Tronto. Instantly he knew what he was going to do. Tron was one of the first movies he saw as a kid in the cinema and it blew him away. Now he had the opportunity to do a homage to it, celebrate it’s visuals and create a beautiful t-shirt at the same time. It was a no-brainer. He spent a long time working on the composition and detailing the buildings, drawing inspiration from the original movie to the trailers for Legacy.
GeekFilter - How do you describe it to someone who may not be looking for something TRON specific?
BCA - We try to keep the descriptions on the site short and engaging. We like to poke fun at ourselves in the copy. Here the description for the TRONto t-shirt. Hopefully we won’t get a letter from Bill’s lawyers.
"Bring out your inner geek. The future of Toronto skyline in all its digital glory. Neon highways and electric towers. Hop on that light cycle and get moving. Or just wear this to a really really great movie/date night with a geek of equal coolness. Afterwards don't take them for coffee, that's just boring, go and race some shopping carts or something. Bill Gates raced bulldozers once. Beat that!"
GeekFilter - Hmmm....now I want to go find some shopping carts! What are some of the future designs we can look forward to?
We try to celebrate the mundane everyday experiences of Canada. We'll be doing a t-shirt of how to order a coffee in Canada and it's planned to include 3D! You can see some other designs on the site - one entitled Size Matters - visit the site to find out why.
GeekFilter - And in the interest of full disclosure, Bearhug is sending GeekFilter a shirt. Thanks guys!
BCA - We hope you enjoy it!
You can get the shirt here and hey, if you are visiting Canada get one of their shirts instead of some tacky tourist trap Maple leaf flag thing. Please!
