How to Install Screensavers & Wallpapers on your Nook

So, this holiday you got a Nook, Barnes and Noble’s new eBook reader. You like the included Tulip wallpaper and the illustrations of the authors in the woodcarving style is pretty nifty, but you want to make it personalized by using your own images.  Here’s step-by-step instructions (for a Mac) on how to do just that. If there’s enough demand I’ll also do a PC version, but they are very similar.

The thumbnails in each step link to a larger image.

    1. Connect your Nook to your computer via the included USB cable.

    2. Go to the desktop.  The Nook should now appear as a drive icon, just like an iPod, digital camera, or external hard drive. If you have a microSD card installed in your Nook then it will appear at the same time.

    3. Double-clicking the Nook drive icon and you should see a list of folders, including "my screensavers" and "my wallpapers."

    4. To add a wallpaper, drag your image into the “my wallpapers” folder.  Our example is on the desktop and named Nook Wallpaper.png. Acceptable file formats are JPG, GIF, PNG, or BMP format. The nook will automatically re-size the image to fit the screen, but for better quality images there’s a bit more to it than that! *

    5. To add screensavers, double-click on the “my screensavers” folder.

    6. You will need to create a sub-folder for your screensaver images. The idea is to have several images for your Nook to cycle through when it's in sleep mode. Go to the File menu and select "new folder" and name it whatever you want. Our example “my screensavers”. Yeah, I know, not very original.

Next copy your screensaver images into that folder like you copied the wallpaper in Step 4.

    7. Now, disconnect the nook from the computer by ejecting the drive.  Remember, if you have a microSD card installed on your nook you will need to eject that as well.

    8. Once your Nook is disconnected from the computer, activate the touchscreen and select the settings option on the far right.

    9. Then select display.

    10. We’ll set our wallpaper first. Select Wallpaper from the touchscreen.

    11. Now select the image you dropped onto the Nook to set your wallpaper, “Nook Wallpaper” in our example. Again, it screams originality, I know.

For screensavers repeat these steps for activating the wallpaper, but choose Screenavers and then select the sub-folder you created in Step 5.

    12. Viola! There is your brand-spanking new personal Nook screensaver and/or wallpaper!

If you’d like to save your wallpapers and screensavers on a microSD card you’ve added to your Nook, you can!  First, create "my wallpaper" and "my screensaver" folders in this drive, then follow the instructions above.

    * Coming Soon: how to create your own wallpapers that really stand out on your Nook. Hint - There’s more to it than just turning a photo black & white and dropping it onto your Nook!

Due to an idiotic repeat spammer, I've disabled comments on this thread. Sorry, honest, good people. One bad apple and all that...
